Tourist information on Bere Island

Bere Island nestes snugly under Sliabh Miskish and the Caha Mountains of the Beara Peninsula, beautifully hugging the northern shore of Bantry Bay. Access is by boat or by any of the two licenced ferries which sail between the Island and Casteltownbere. (phone/fax 027 75014 - Murphy’s Ferry service).

It’s a charming Island, away from the hustle and bustle of busier waters, with an air of peace and tranquility which is unsurpassed in this part of the world.

Scatterred throughout the Island are the numerous remains, including two six inch guns, of the vast late victorian military fortifications which Britain (booh) built to protect its naval base at Berehaven which they held until 1938. For the energetic there are two Martello towers in very good condition. They will repay the effort of the hill climb with stunning views over the harbour and bay.

When the sun shines, chidren and adults alike can enjoy safe water and sandy beaches in spectacularly sheltered coves.

There are two pubs, a restaurant(Kitty’s phone 027 75004) and a seafood restaurant on the Island. but Bere Island’s greatest assets is its unspoilt, unpolluted and uncommercialised environnment (this include also the animals and the people).

Hereunder you may find once the history of the Island if Ted sent me the text of his book... for the moment you have the reference ISBN 0 951 9186 0 5
